Below are notes to a sermon preached Sunday evening, March 14, 2004, at Gospel Light Baptist Church, Albany, Georgia.
MOSES AND JESUS – THE BIRTH OF A DELIVERER
By Michael D. O’Neal Pastor, Gospel Light Baptist Church Albany, Georgia
Scripture Reading: Exodus 1:22-2:10
Text: Exodus 2:10
Exodus 2:10 And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water.
Introduction: I’ve been showing how that Joseph is the greatest type, or prophetic picture of the Lord Jesus Christ in the book of Genesis. A few notes before we begin tonight’s message in Ex. 1:
1. Joseph dies in Exodus 1:6
2. God’s people become FRUITFUL in Exodus 1:7
3. Read John 12:24 about a CORN of wheat needing to die before fruit comes.
4. CORN in Egypt, from Joseph! “much fruit”
5. Egypt is a type of the world
6. Pharaoh is a type of Satan
7. There was bondage in Egypt – Exodus 1:14
8. There was bitterness in Egypt – Exodus 1:14
9. There were blessings in Egypt – Exodus 1:12
As we come to Exodus, the greatest type, or prophetic picture of Jesus in the book of Exodus is Moses. Tonight I want us to see the similarities of the birth of Moses to the birth of our Lord.
We do this in obedience to the Lord, who said:
John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
The book of Exodus, the second book of Moses, is one of those scriptures that testifies of JESUS, for Jesus said later in the same chapter:
John 5:46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.
Moses wrote of JESUS. Jesus met with two of His disciples after the resurrection,
Luke 24:27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
Tonight we’re going to look in the second book of Moses, and consider:
MOSES AND JESUS – THE BIRTH OF A DELIVERER
First observe, concerning the birth of Moses:
I. THE RAGE THAT ENDANGERED HIM
Exodus 1:22 And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.
Matthew 2:16-18 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, 18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.
Pharaoh’s attack upon Moses and Israel reminds us not only of Herod’s decree in the days of our Lord on earth but also of
A. Satan’s hatred for the people of God
B. Satan’s hatred for the person of the Lord Jesus Christ
C. Satan’s hatred for the purpose and pardon of Jesus
Next, consider:
II. THE RESCUE THAT HE ENJOYED
Exodus 2:1-6 (Read)
In this rescue, look for JESUS:
A. In the container (the ARK – a type of Christ (see Genesis 7)
B. In the confidence (Hebrews 7:11 – “by faith; Ephesians 2:8)
C. In the circumstances
1. God’s providence
2. The discovery
3. The mother was PAID by the daughter of Pharaoh to raise her own son!
Third, look at:
III. THE ROYALTY HE EMBRACED AT BIRTH
Exodus 2:10 And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water.
Jesus was born KING OF THE JEWS
A. This was a physical privilege
1. Moses was born in Egypt
2. Jesus was born in this world as a descendent of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
B. This was a providential privilege
1. God worked then and later
2. God called Moses a “king” – Deuteronomy 33:4-5
3. Jesus has a spiritual kingdom now (kingdom of God) and will receive a physical kingdom later (kingdom of God manifest as the kingdom of heaven)
Next, consider
IV. THE REDEMPTION HE EXTENDED TOWARD HIS PEOPLE
Exodus 2:11-12 And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren. 12 And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.
A. He saw the need – V. 11
B. He slew the Egyptian – V. 12 – type of the world, the flesh, and the devil
Finally, observe
V. THE REJECTION HE EXPERIENCED
Exodus 2:13-14 And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow? 14 And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known.
A. They did not submit to his authority
1. “Who made thee a prince and a judge over us?”
2. “Art thou king of the Jews?”
3. “We have no king but Caesar!”
B. They did not see his purpose
1. Acts 7:25 For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.
2. Luke 23:34a Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do …
3. Acts 3:17 And now, brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers.
