MOSES, JESUS, AND LET MY PEOPLE GO

Text: Exodus 5:1
Exodus 5:1 And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness.
Introduction: As the greatest type, or prophetic picture of Jesus in Genesis in Joseph, the greatest type in Exodus is Moses.
One of the great similarities between Moses and the Lord Jesus is that both were liberators of God’s people.
There are three kinds of deliverance from sin, past, present, and future, which are all pictured in the Exodus:
1. Deliverance from the penalty of sin
2. Deliverance from the power of sin
3. Deliverance from the presence of sin
2 Corinthians 1:10 Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;
We are going to focus mostly on the second stage of salvation, what we call sanctification, or salvation from the power of sin.
A New Testament Bible student should not doubt the accuracy of the historical account of Exodus, but he should also look for Jesus in the book.
Remember that Jesus said:
John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
The book of Exodus, the second book of Moses, is one of those scriptures that testifies of JESUS, for Jesus said later in the same chapter:
John 5:46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.
Moses wrote of JESUS. The Lord Jesus Christ met with two of His discouraged disciples after the resurrection
Luke 24:27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
Tonight we’re going to begin at Moses, and expound unto you in these scriptures the things concerning our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Tonight’s message is titled:
MOSES, JESUS, AND LET MY PEOPLE GO
We’re going to consider four truths tonight, dealing primarily with sanctification, or deliverance from the power of sin, pictured in Exodus:
1. The domination
2. The demand
3. The deliverer
4. The deliverance
I. THE DOMINATION
Exodus 1:13-14 And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour: 14 And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.
A. They had escaped a famine
B. They had enjoyed freedom
C. They had experienced a fall
D. They had endured frustration
II. THE DEMAND
Exodus 5:1 And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness.
The demand was for:
A. Freedom – “Let”
B. A Family – “my people”
C. A function – “go”
1. More than liberty
2. Service – Ex. 8:1
3. Soul-winning – John 15:16; Matthew 28:19-20
D. A feast – “a feast unto me”
1. This is fellowship – Rev. 3:20
2. Many Christians are bound by sin and are not enjoying fellowship with the Lord.
III. THE DELIVERER
Acts 7:25 For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.
Acts 7:35 This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.
Romans 11:26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:
A. He was a special man
1. Moses had two citizenships – Levi and Egypt
2. Jesus is the God-Man 1 Timothy 3:16
3. Moses represented God – Exodus 4:16; 7:1
4. John 1:1,14
B. He was a sent man
1. John 3:17
C. He was a shadow of a better Man to come
1. Acts 7:37 This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.
IV. THE DELIVERANCE
Acts 7:36 He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.
This deliverance came through
A. The precepts of God
1. Exodus 8:1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, Go unto Pharaoh, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Let my people go, that they may serve me.
2. John 8:31-32 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
B. The power of God
C. Persistence in facing and overcoming resistance
1. The 10 plagues
2. Pharaoh’s “backsliding” from commitment
