Good News for Modern Man
NIV – Col. 1:14
John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
Those scriptures were specifically Genesis through Deuteronomy, the first five books of the Bible, for the Lord further stated:
John 5:46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.
Join me in the passage as we look once again for prophetic pictures of our Lord and His wonderful redemption in the Old Testament.
I. THE COMMANDMENTS
Exodus 24:3 And Moses came and told the people all the words of the LORD, and all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which the LORD hath said will we do.
A. The commandments were divine
1. They were from heaven
2. They were holy, just, and good
B. The commandments were desired
1. Having been rescued from Egypt by God’s grace, the people quickly chose to prove their worthiness by their works.
2. Man by nature will choose his own works over God’s grace every time.
C. The commandments were disobeyed
1. Notice the four “all”s in the verse
2. Observe the alls of Isaiah 53:6, Romans 3:23; and especially Deuteronomy 6:25
II. THE CRIMSON STAIN REMOVER
Exodus 24:6 And Moses took half of the blood, and put it in basons; and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar.
The blood was divided into two containers, reminding us of
A. Two time periods
1. Old and New Testament
2. Before and after Calvary
3. Old – the blood in picture
4. New – the blood in power
B. Two types of people
1. Unconverted sinners (1 Peter 2:2)
2. Uncondemned sinners (Acts 20:28)
C. Two
1. Positional cleansing (Revelation 1:5)
2. Progressive cleansing (1 John 1:7)
III. THE COVENANT
Exodus 24:8 And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD hath made with you concerning all these words.
A. A covenant of obedience
1. Demanded by the law
2. Performed by Christ alone
B. A covenant of offerings
1. Many offerings in O.T.
2. One offering in New
IV. THE CONTACT
Exodus 24:10 And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness.
I believe they saw the Lord’s angel, or appearance. See Jn. 1:14; 14:9
A. God is invisible
B. God was incarnate (1 Timothy 3:16)
C. God was intimate (1 John 1:1)
1. What a blessing!
V. THE CLEARING
Exodus 24:11a And upon the nobles of the children of Israel he laid not his hand:
No man could see God and live, but God spared them. Thank the Lord, as a type of New Testament salvation through the blood:
A. There was no condemnation (John 5:24)
B. There were no casualties
VI. THE COMMUNION
Exodus 24:11 And upon the nobles of the children of Israel he laid not his hand: also they saw God, and did eat and drink.
Eating God and eating and drinking point to:
A. The reception of Christ
B. The remembrance of Christ in the Lord’s supper
C. The relationship we have in Christ in fellowship (Revelation 3:20)
VII. THE COMPREHENSION
Exodus 24:12 And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them.
“that thou mayest TEACH them”
God teaches His children today because of the blood of the New Covenant,
A. In tables of the heart
B. Through teachers
1. The Spirit of God
2. The shepherd over a flock
C. Though the testimonies God has written (the scriptures)
