UNDER THE WINGS OF JESUS
By Michael D. O’Neal
Pastor, Gospel Light Baptist Church
Albany, Georgia
Scripture Reading: Ruth 2:1-12
Text: Ruth 2:12
Ruth 2:12 The LORD recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust.
Introduction: Tonight I want you to join me in another look at our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, testified to in the Old Testament. We have confidence in finding the Lord prophesied and typified therein, because He said:
John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
He met with two discouraged disciples after His resurrection:
Luke 24:27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
In our text, Boaz recognized the fact that Ruth had turned from the heathen gods of her homeland to the Lord God of Israel, and had come under His wings to trust in Him. Now look at a verse in the New Testament:
Matthew 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
I. UNDER HIS WINGS IS A PERSONAL CHOICE
Matthew 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
A. A choice to reject other shelters – church, baptism
B. A choice to receive the Savior’s covering
C. A choice to rely on Christ’s protection
II. UNDER HIS WINGS IS A PRECIOUS COMFORT
John 13:23 Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
Psalms 63:7 Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.
A. Because of the Lord’s closeness
B. Because of the Lord’s care
C. Because of the Lord’s communion
III. UNDER HIS WINGS IS A PROTECTIVE CANOPY
Psalms 36:7 How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.
Psalms 57:1 Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.
Psalms 61:4 I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah.
Psalms 63:7 Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.
A. Protected from fallen things – stock market, brethren
B. Protected from fearsome enemies – lion, wolf, bear
C. Protected from frightening elements – wind, lightning
IV. UNDER HIS WINGS IS A PLACE OF CONCEALMENT
Psalms 17:8 Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings,
A. Hidden in the shadows from the enemy
B. Hidden in the substance of His body (1 Cor. 12:13)
C. Hidden in the shelter of His arms
It is also a training ground for eagles:
Isaiah 40:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
