Below are notes to a sermon preached Sunday evening, August 21, 2005, at Gospel Light Baptist Church, Albany, Georgia.
DAVID AND JESUS -THE MAN WHO WON THE BATTLE FOR US

Text: 1 Samuel 17:49
1 Samuel 17:49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.
Introduction: We continue to find Jesus in the Old Testament, even as He told the people of His day:
John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
Luke 24:27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
Here we see that David is a type, or prophetic picture, of the Lord Jesus Christ, in his defeat of the giant, Goliath.
Notice that David wrought what was called “a great salvation”:
1 Samuel 19:5 For he did put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great salvation for all Israel: thou sawest it, and didst rejoice: wherefore then wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?
Notice that what Jesus wrought for US is a “great salvation”:
Hebrews 2:3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
Notice some things about David:
I. HE WAS THE CHOSEN ONE OF GOD
1 Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
A. Jesus is the chosen Sovereign
B. Jesus is the chosen Savior
II. HE WAS THE CREATOR OF A NEW BEGINNING
1 Samuel 16:10-11 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these. 11And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said,
There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.
Jesus is called “a new and living way” in Hebrews, bringing:
A. A new covenant
B. A new creature – 2 Cor. 5:17
C. A new church – Acts 7:38; Col. 1:18
III. HE WAS THE CHRIST OR ANOINTED OF GOD
1 Samuel 16:12-13 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
Compare Acts 4:27 with Ps. 2:2 for the fact Christ means anointed.
A. Anointed with the Spirit
B. Anointed for service
IV. HE WAS CALLED FOR BY THE GIANT
1 Samuel 17:10 And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.
1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
John 19:5 Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!
A. Goliath wanted a representative man
B. Goliath wanted a real man
V. HE WAS CLEAN IN HIS BEHAVIOR
1 Samuel 19:4 And Jonathan spake good of David unto Saul his father, and said unto him, Let not the king sin against his servant, against David; because he hath not sinned against thee, and because his works have been
to thee-ward very good:
John 8:46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?
1 Peter 1:19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
A. Jesus’ words were clean
B. Jesus’ works were clean
VI. HE WAS CRITICIZED BY HIS BRETHREN
1 Samuel 17:28 And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.
John 1:11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
A. About his attitude
1. Why camest thou down hither?
2. He was accused of being proud and naughty
B. About his actions
1. Leaving the “few sheep” in the wilderness
2. The actions of our Lord were also under constant attack
VII. HE WAS A CONQUEROR WITH ONE BLOW
1 Samuel 17:49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.
Hebrews 10:14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.
A. There was a skin
B. There was a stone
C. There was a sling
D. There was a smiting
E. There was a success
