Below are notes to a sermon preached Sunday evening, June 05, 2005, at
Gospel Light Baptist Church, Albany, Georgia.
HE IS THE ROCK, AND THAT ROCK IS CHRIST
By Michael D. O’Neal
Pastor, Gospel Light Baptist Church
Albany, Georgia
Scripture Reading: Deut. 32:1-4,31
Text: Deut. 32:4
Deuteronomy 32:4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways
are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.
Introduction: This chapter is a song, and I want you to notice that it
is “Rock Music.” See the Rock in verses 4,15,18,30, and 31.
It is NOT African rock music;
It is NOT jungle rock music.
That kind of rock music is that which has permeated our society over the
last 100 years.
It is THIS kind of Rock music:
“Rock of ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in thee!”
Once again we find this fifth book of Moses pointing to our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ, even as Jesus said
John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal
life: and they are they which testify of me.
John 5:46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he
wrote of me.
And of the Lord Jesus Christ, Moses said:
Deuteronomy 32:4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways
are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.
Tonight’s message is titled,
HE IS THE ROCK, AND
THAT ROCK IS CHRIST
I. JESUS IS THE ROCK OF SALVATION
Deuteronomy 32:15 But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen
fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness; then he
forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his
salvation.
Psalms 95:1 O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful
noise to the rock of our salvation.
A. Making it a SECURE salvation
B. Making it a SETTLED salvation
II. JESUS IS THE ROCK OF SONSHIP
Deuteronomy 32:18 Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and
hast forgotten God that formed thee.
James 1:18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we
should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
Of children it is sometimes said, and it is true of us when we meet the
people of this world in our daily living:
A. We are a chip off the old Block
B. We crawled out from under a Rock
(He is our shelter)
III. JESUS IS THE ROCK OF STRENGTH
Isaiah 17:10 Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, and
hast not been mindful of the rock of thy strength …
Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth
me.
A. He gives strength to stand
B. He gives strength to subdue
our enemies – the world, the
flesh and the devil
C. He gives strength to serve
IV. JESUS IS THE ROCK OF STABILITY
Matthew 7:24-25 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and
doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon
a rock: 25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds
blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon
a rock.
A. Jesus stabilizes your service
B. Jesus stabilizes your spirit
1. No big ups, no big downs
2. Always rejoicing in the
Lord (Phil. 4:4)
V. JESUS IS THE ROCK OF SHELTER
Psalms 31:2-3 Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my
strong rock, for an house of defence to save me. 3 For thou art my rock
and my fortress; therefore for thy name’s sake lead me, and guide me.
Psalms 61:2-3 From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my
heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. 3 For
thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.
A. When people oppose us
B. When problems oppose us
“The Lord’s our Rock, in Him we hide,
A shelter in the time of storm”
VI. JESUS IS THE ROCK OF SUPPLY
Deuteronomy 8:15b … who brought thee forth water out of the rock of
flint;
Philippians 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his
riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
A. Our Rock gives a solid, dependable
supply (“Old Faithful”)
B. Our Rock gives a sufficient supply
VII. JESUS IS THE ROCK OF SWEETNESS
Psalms 81:16b … with honey out of the rock should I have satisfied
thee.
1 Peter 2:3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
Jesus is “Rock candy”!
A. His sweetness is healthy
1. Not artificial
2. No ill side effects
3. No decay
B. His sweetness is holy
1. Not the sweetness the whorish
world offers
Recently there were mud slides in California. A news reporter
interviewed a man who viewed the event in safety. You see, his house was
not on clay; it was on a rock.
“On Christ the solid Rock I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
All other ground is sinking sand.
