JESUS – THE SOUL NOT LEFT IN HELL

Scripture Reading: Ps. 16:1-11
Text: Ps. 16:10
Psalms 16:10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
Introduction: Tonight I want to bring to your attention another Old Testament passage that is a direct, concrete, prophetic reference to the Lord Jesus Christ. Remember that Jesus said:
John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
I am again following the Lord’s example, who met taught two of His students at PRBI (Post-Resurrection Bible Institute):
Luke 24:27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
I am DOGMATIC about the fact that our text is NOT about David, but is a prophecy about the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. My authority for my certainty is the New Testament, where we read in Acts 2:25-31 (Have congregation turn to and read):
Acts 2:25-31 For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: 26 Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad;
moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: 27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 28 Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance. 29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. 0 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; 31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of
Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.
In our passage tonight I want to show you 5 aspects of this prophecy of our Lord Jesus Christ:

I. THE DETERMINATION
Psalms 16:8 I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
Isaiah 50:7 For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.
A. Jesus was not moved from His purpose on earth
B. Jesus was not moved from His painful prospects of betrayal, denial, shame, and death
C. Jesus was not moved from His plan for our salvation
II. THE DELIGHT
Psalms 16:9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.
Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
A. The joy of redemption of sinners
B. The joy of the resurrection
C. The joy of the regeneration of believers
D. The joy of the return to the Father
III. THE DESCENT INTO HELL
Psalms 16:10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell …
Ephesians 4:9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
Matthew 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
A. The soul of Jesus travailed
1. Isa. 53:10 says that his soul was made an offering for sin
B. The soul of Jesus traveled
C. The soul of Jesus took our sins away and dumped them in hell
D. The soul of Jesus triumphed, which brings us to my next point:
IV. THE DEFEAT OF THE ENEMY
Psalms 16:10 … neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
Acts 13:35-37 Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 36 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was
laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption: 37 But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.
A. Jesus defeated the devil
B. Jesus defeated death
C. Jesus defeated depravity
V. THE DEPARTURE FROM EARTH
Psalms 16:11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.
Acts 2:32-35 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. 33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. 34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, 35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool.
A. Jesus stood upright in the tomb
B. Jesus stepped up in the clouds
C. Jesus sat down in heaven
