MILLENNIUM MEN FOR THE MASTER

Below are notes to a sermon preached Sunday morning, June 20, 1999, at Gospel Light Baptist Church, Albany, Georgia:

MILLENNIUM MEN FOR THE MASTER
By Michael D. O’Neal……Pastor, Gospel Light Baptist Church…… Albany, Georgia

Scripture Reading: 1 Chronicles 11:1-10

Text: 1 Chronicles 11:10

1 Chronicles 11:10 These also are the chief of the mighty men whom David had, who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom, and with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.

Introduction: What follows today’s scripture reading is a list of someof the mighty men of David. These were men who strengthened themselves with him in the kingdom, with all Israel, to make him king. A new era had begun. God had appointed a king over Israel who was a man after his own heart. It was essential that David have mighty men to help him establish the kingdom. We are on the edge of a new millennium. In six months and 11 days, not only will we be going into the 21st century, but we will also be going into the third millennium after Christ’s birth. It is surely a momentous time on our calendar.

Some people think the Lord is coming back on Jan. 1, 2000. Some people believe the world is coming to an end. What should a father be when the millennium arrives? How should he prepare?

Some fathers are preparing to “rough it.” That’s right. They see our age of technology and luxury coming to an end. They are withdrawing all their money from banks, they are buying farm land, digging wells, stocking up on food, water, and emergency supplies, and purchasing survival gear.

Other fathers feel the pressure of computers and feel that they must learn something about the World Wide Web.

Well, the millennium is coming, one way or the other. I want to tell you what I believe fathers need as we approach this next 1,000 years:

IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM

I. A MAN NEEDS TO HAVE THE RIGHT FATHER

On this Father’s Day, I want to emphasize that, in order to BE the right kind of father, a man must also HAVE the right kind of Father!

Galatians 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

A. Only a SAVED man can truly love his wife and children as he should

B. Only a SAVED man can truly lead his wife and children as he should

C. Only a SAVED man can truly LIVE as he should

IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM

II. A MAN NEEDS TO HAVE THE RIGHT FAITH

1 Timothy 6:17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;

A. Trust God, not gold

B. Trust God, not government

C. Trust God, not guns

IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM

III. A MAN NEEDS TO HAVE THE RIGHT FRIENDS

Proverbs 13:20 He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

Psalms 119:63 I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts.

A. He needs the right counsellors

B. He needs the right church

C. He needs the right companions

IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM

IV. A MAN NEEDS TO HAVE THE RIGHT FOCUS

Luke 12:19-20 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. 20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?

A. Salvation is more important than Social Security and retirement

B. Soul-winning is more important than sports

C. Service to God is more important than a savings account.
