MISSION: POSSIBLE

By Michael D. O’Neal              Pastor, Gospel Light Baptist Church              Albany, Georgia

Scripture Reading: Matthew 28:18-20

Text: Matthew 28:18

Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

Introduction: When I was a child, a popular television show was called, “Mission: Impossible.” When we look at what we call The Great Commission, to go into all nations and teach them about the Lord Jesus Christ, it seems impossible. However, before Jesus sent out His disciples, He told them, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” Then He said, “Go ye therefore and teach all nations …” Jesus makes it possible, by His power, for us to do just that.

Concerning our mission,

  1. There are many false ideas. Some people believe you have to have a gift for soul-winning. However, soul-winning is the job of every Christian. It is not only a mission; it is a MANDATE, or a commandment.
  2. There are many fooled believers. They think that they are following Jesus, but they are not winning souls. Matthew 4:19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
  3. There are many fearful believers.
  4. There are many forgotten sinners.

I. THERE IS PREEMINENCE TO THIS MISSION

1 Timothy 1:15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

A. It is most important for forgiveness

B. It is most important to the Father

C. It is most important for the future

II. THERE IS A PLAN FOR THIS MISSION

Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

A. To the unreached here – our Jerusalem

B. To our unreached neighbors – our “all Judaea”

C. To the unwanted – our Samaria

D. To the unseen – our “uttermost part of the earth”

III. THERE IS POWER FOR THIS MISSION

Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

A. There is the power of the Savior

B. There is the power of the Spirit of God

C. There is the power of the scriptures

D. There is the power of the saving message

IV. THERE IS PROFIT IN THIS MISSION

Psalms 126:5-6 They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. 6 He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.

A. It blesses Christ

B. It brings converts

C. It builds the church
