WHY YOU SHOULD READ YOUR BIBLE THIS YEAR

By Michael D. O’Neal                      Pastor, Gospel Light Baptist Church                      Albany, Georgia

Scripture Reading: Matthew 21:33-46

Text: Matthew 21:42

Matthew 21:42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?

Introduction: I want to encourage you to read the Bible through in 2002, from front to back, from Genesis to Revelation. You can do it. Most of you can read it through from cover to cover in 15 minutes a day. Some of you can read it through in 5 to 10 minutes a day. In addition to any studying you might do, let me encourage you to READ the Bible this year, ALL of it. Jesus asked the chief priest and elders if they had missed reading a passage in the word of God. You will, if you don’t read ALL of it.

At the invitation I am going to ask you to commit yourself to read the Bible through in the coming year. At the altar we will have printed helps to keep you on track for doing this.

Besides the fact that if you DON’T read the Bible through you will MISS some precious truths of God, let me give you some reasons why you should take the time to read the scriptures this year.

YOU SHOULD READ THE BIBLE THROUGH THIS YEAR BECAUSE

I. IT IS THE SECRET TO REAL PEACE

You can rest upon the promises of God!

A. About pardon

  • 1 John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

C. About protection in time of trouble

  • Psalms 59:16 But I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble.
The Precious BibleThough the cover is worn
And pages are torn,
And though places bear traces of tears,
Yet more precious than gold
Is the Book, worn and old,
That can shatter and scatter my fears.

When I prayerfully look
In the precious Book
Many pleasures and treasures I see;
Many tokens of love,
From the Father above
Who is nearest and dearest to me.

This Book is my guide,
‘Tis friend by my side,
It will lighten and brighten my way;
And each promise I find,
Soothes and gladdens my mind,
As I read it and heed it today.

Read it through in 2002, and get real peace!

The AnvilLast eve I paused before a blacksmith’s door
and heard the anvil ring the vesper chime.
And looking in, I saw old hammers on the floor,
Worn by the beating years of time.
“How many anvils have you had,” said I,
“To wear and batter all these hammers so?”
“Just one,” said he, then with a twinkle in his eyes,
“The anvil wears the hammers out you know.”
And so I thought, the anvil of God’s word,
For ages skeptic blows have beat upon.
Yet though the noise of falling blows was heard
The anvil is unharmed-the hammers gone!
