The Walk of Enoch

Below are notes to a sermon preached Sunday evening, September 22, 2002, at Gospel Light Baptist Church, Albany, Georgia.

THE WALK OF ENOCH

By Michael D. O’Neal              Pastor, Gospel Light Baptist Church              Albany, Georgia

Scripture Reading: Genesis 5:18-24

Text: Genesis 5:24

Genesis 5:24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

Introduction: Enoch is one of the most unusual people in the Bible. He is one of the two people who lived without dying (the other one, of course, being Elijah). However, I want us to note a special record about him — his WALK. ENOCH WALKED WITH GOD.

That was also said of Noah in Genesis 6:9.

What can we learn from Enoch’s walk with God? Well,

I. IT WAS A CHOSEN WALK

Genesis 5:22 And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:

Joshua 24:15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

He chose to walk with God when it wasn’t popular to walk with God.

A. This was a choice of attitude (heart)

B. This was a choice of action

C. This was a choice of association(with God)

  • You need to choose how you want to be identified … in private, with your family, on your job, in public
  •

II. IT WAS A CONTRARY WALK

Amos 3:3 Can two walk together, except they be agreed?

Enoch was in agreement with God, in order to walk with Him, but on the negative side, his walk was contrary to

A. The pull of the flesh – Galatians 5:17

B. The practices of men – Mark 7:5-9

C. The philosophies of the world – Romans 12:2

III. IT WAS A COMMITTED WALK

That is, it was a walk of TRUST, or of FAITH.)

Hebrews 11:5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

To walk with God is to trust Him

A. For salvation

  • The walk doesn’t even begin until a person has first believed on Christ.
  •

B. For strength

C. For security

D. For supply

E. For success

IV. IT WAS A CHANGED WALK

His walk or manner of life was obviously different. People saw it. He had a TESTIMONY while he was on this earth:

Hebrews 11:5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

A. It was peculiar

B. It was powerful

C. It was prophetic

  • Reminding us of the Rapture – people who will not experience death
  •

D. It was a picture

  • To the lost and to the saved
  •

  • He preached and portrayed the changed walk (Jude 1:14-15)
  •

WHO WILL CHOOSE TO WALK WITH GOD TONIGHT?
