Below are notes to a sermon preached Sunday evening, Dec. 22, 2002, at Gospel Light Baptist Church, Albany, Georgia.

WHERE TO FIND THE GOD OF ALL COMFORT

By Michael D. O’Neal              Pastor, Gospel Light Baptist Church              Albany, Georgia

Scripture Reading: 2 Corinthians 1:1-6

Text: 2 Corinthians 1:3

2 Corinthians 1:3 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;

Introduction: When theologians endeavor to define God, they usually do so by pointing out His attributes, such as

God is all-knowing – omniscient

God is all-powerful – omnipotent

God is all-present – omnipresent

One attribute that is rarely mentioned however, is that of our text, which says that our God is the God of “all comfort.”

Thank God for his Presence, His Power, and His Perception, but there are going to be times when you need to find the God of all COMFORT.

Here is where you can find Him:

I. IN SECRET

Psalms 91:1-2 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

The secret place of the heart is the place of

A. Gigantic personal attacks

B. God’s provided armor (breastplate of righteousness, shield of faith)

C. Greatest peace available

II. IN SALVATION

Luke 10:20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

It is comforting to have

A. A salvation that is finalized

B. Sins that are forgiven

C. A Savior who is also my Friend

III. IN THE SCRIPTURES

Romans 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

We get comfort when we look into the Bible and see:

A. God’s promises

B. God’s provision

C. God’s protection

D. God’s presence

E. God’s power

IV. IN THE SPIRIT OF GOD

Acts 9:31 Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.

The Holy Ghost comforts us with

A. Reminders of the Scriptures

B. Revelations of the Son

C. Reassurances of sonship

V. IN THE SAINTS

1 Thessalonians 5:11 Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

The church is a body. When one member hurts, all the members hurt with it.

We find comfort in the saints in their

A. Support

B. Speech

C. Strength

  • Their example of overcoming
  •

VI. IN SINGING

Psalms 137:2-4 We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof. 3 For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion. 4 How shall we sing the LORD’S song in a strange land?

Good music

A. Scatters our adversaries

B. Soothes our anxieties

C. Steadies our advancement

VII. IN THE SECOND COMING 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

We are comforted by the truth of

A. A return of our Savior – 1 Thessalonians 4:16a

B. A rising in the sky – 1 Thessalonians 4:16

C. A reunion with the saints – 1 Thessalonians 4:17
