Below are notes to a sermon preached Sunday evening, October 26, 2003, at Gospel Light Baptist Church, Albany, Georgia.
FRIGHT NIGHT
By Michael D. O’Neal Pastor, Gospel Light Baptist Church Albany, Georgia
Scripture Reading: Luke 12:16-20
Text: Luke 12:20
Luke 12:20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
Introduction: I am calling tonight’s message, “Fright Night.” One of the things that causes fear is the UNEXPECTED. Some things frighten us because they SHOCK or SURPRISE us, whereas we might not have been frightened had we been able to prepare for it.
BOO! only scares you if you don’t expect it.
Illustration – Friend of mine nearly jumped out of his pew at a revival when I was a teenager, as the preacher yelled in his sermon.
Joke: Boo who? and Who be BOO?
Story: Boy running through a graveyard with a ghost after him.
If you died tonight, would it be:
I. AN UNEXPECTED DATE FOR YOU?
Luke 12:20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
“THIS night”
We need to remember that:
A. Every day is a present, a gift from God
1. 2 Peter 3:9 – God is longsuffering
B. Every day is precious, valuable
1. It can’t be re-lived
C. Every day is a possibility
1. You may die today
Thou FOOL … it’s foolish not to plan for this DATE.
Second, if you died tonight, would it be:
II. AN UNEXPECTED DEMAND FROM YOU?
Luke 12:20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
“thy soul shall be required of thee”
One day, it could be today,
A. God will demand that you STOP
B. God will demand that you SEPARATE
1. You are not your body; you are IN your body
2. Your soul will LEAVE, when your soul is REQUIRED
C. God will demand that you SEE
1. Your foolishness
2. Your fate
Thou FOOL … it’s foolish not to plan for this demand
Third, if you died tonight, would it be:
III. AN UNXPECTED DAMAGE FOR YOU?
Luke 12:20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
“then whose shall these things be”?
A. You will lose the ground you owned
B. You will lose the goods you possessed
C. You will lose your guarantee for future ease and happiness
Thou FOOL … it’s foolish not to plan for this damage
If you died tonight, would it be:
IV. AN UNEXPECTED DESTINATION FOR YOU?
Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
Hell will be full of people:
A. Who talked about heaven
B. Who thought about getting saved
C. Who tried to be religious
D. Who took TOO LONG to trust Christ
Thou FOOL … it’s foolish not to plan for this destination
