MOSES, JESUS, AND SHEW A MIRACLE

Scripture Reading: Exodus 7:1-17
Text: Exodus 7:9
Exodus 7:9 When Pharaoh shall speak unto you, saying, Shew a miracle for you: then thou shalt say unto Aaron, Take thy rod, and cast it before Pharaoh, and it shall become a serpent.
Introduction: The greatest type, or prophetic picture of Jesus in Exodus is Moses. Last week I showed you that one of the great similarities between Moses and the Lord Jesus is that both were liberators of God’s people.
This is not accidental, but providential!
Remember that Jesus said:
John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
The scriptures to which Jesus referred included specifically the first five books of the Old Testament, what is called the Pentateuch, or the writings of Moses. We know this for Jesus followed up by saying:
John 5:46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.
So, Moses wrote of JESUS.
After the resurrection, Jesus met with two disciples who did not accept the truth of His resurrection:
Luke 24:27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
Tonight I want to show you JESUS once again in the writing of Moses, showing you how that even as Moses promised that God would raise up a Prophet like unto Moses, the two men are similar in regard to the thought of our text, that is, the occurrence of miracles in their ministry.
Tonight’s message is titled:

I. MIRACLES WERE CALLED FOR BY MAN
Exodus 7:9 When Pharaoh shall speak unto you, saying, Shew a miracle for you: then thou shalt say unto Aaron, Take thy rod, and cast it before Pharaoh, and it shall become a serpent.
A. After rejecting the past
1. The blessings of Joseph (type of Christ) upon the Egyptians
B. After resisting the pricks of conscience
C. After rebelling against the preacher

II. MIRACLES WERE CONNECTED WITH THE MINISTER
Exodus 5:1 And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness.
A. They were identifying
1. Serpent (John 3:14-16)
2. Blood (V. 17)
B. They were imitated
1. Like counterfeit miracles today
2. Counterfeit ministers
3. Counterfeit messiahs
C. They were insufficient (to turn the Egyptians around)
1. 1st occurrence of “miracle” in New Testament:
2. Mark 6:52 For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened.
III. MIRACLES WERE CONFIRMATION OF THE MESSAGE
Mark 16:20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.
A. As a message of deity
B. As a message of deliverance
C. As a message of damnation
IV. MIRACLES WERE CHARACTERISTIC OF THE MISSION
John 4:48 Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.
1 Corinthians 1:22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
Acts 7:36 He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.
A. To a people – Jews
B. To a power (Gentile)
1. The word “miracle” occurs TEN (Gentile number) times in the Bible
C. To a purpose
1. Freedom
2. Glorifying God
