Below are notes to a sermon preached Sunday evening, July 03, 2005, at Gospel Light Baptist Church, Albany, Georgia.

JOSHUA, JESUS AND THE UNITED NATIONS

By Michael D. O’Neal
Pastor, Gospel Light Baptist Church

Scripture Reading: Joshua 10:1-27

Text: Joshua 10:5

Joshua 10:5 Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.

Introduction: For two years, I have been bringing messages from Genesis through Deuteronomy, showing you from the scriptures that Moses wrote
about Jesus Christ. I have preached around 100 sermons showing that the Pentateuch, the five books of Moses, testify of Jesus.

Jesus plainly said that was true.

John 5:46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.

We have now also seen that the book of Joshua testifies of Jesus. In His sovereignty, God chose that the children of Israel would be brought into the Promised Land by a man named Joshua, which is a Hebrew name meaning the same thing as the Hebrew name, JESUS. I pointed out to you that
twice in the New Testament, the name “Jesus” is used for Joshua:

Acts 7:45 Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;

Hebrews 4:8 For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.

This chapter describes one of a number of wars that was fought under Joshua’s leadership, and I believe that there are some great comparisons that can and should be drawn between his battle, and the battle of Armageddon at the close of the Tribulation period.

The Rapture – explain
The Tribulation – explain
The Millennial Reign – explain

I. THE PARTNERSHIP

(Read Ps. 2)

This was, like the ten kings in the Tribulation will be,

    A. A devilish partnership

    B. A determined partnership
        1. Ps. 2 “set themselves”

    C. A doomed partnership

Five kings … five is associated with DEATH in scripture.
The term appears five times in this chapter, chapter 10, which is two times five, and occurring the first time in verse 5. Coincidence? No, PROVIDENCE. See verse 5,16,22,23, and 26.

II. THE PLEA

Joshua 10:6 And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.

Come up to us quickly – See Rev. 22:20

    A. A plea of desperation

    B. A plea for deliverance

III. THE PROPHETIC BATTLE – V. 7-21

Joshua 10:7 So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.

See Rev. 19:11-21

    A. The sudden arrival – V. 9

    B. The slaughter – V. 10

    C. The stones from heaven – V. 11

    D. The signs of Heaven – V. 12-14

    E. The shutting up – V. 21

IV. THE PUNISHMENT – V. 22-27

    A. The summons – V. 22
        1. Rev. 20:11

    B. The submission – V. 23
        1. feet on their necks

    C. The sentence – V. 26
        1. See Rev. 20:15
