By Michael D. O’Neal
Pastor, Gospel Light Baptist Church
Albany, Georgia
Scripture Reading: Nahum 1:1-7
Text: Nahum 1:3
Nahum 1:3 The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
Introduction:
Obvious lessons:
1. Gratitude
2. Giving
I. WE SHOULD LEARN LESSONS ABOUT RETRIBUTION FOR WICKEDNESS
Jonah 1:2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.
Lost man’s comment this week: New Orleans is like Sodom and Gomorrah.
Southern decadence
A. God deals with sin
B. God deals with societies
II. WE SHOULD LEARN LESSONS ABOUT REJECTION OF WARNINGS
Proverbs 1:23-27 Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you. 24 Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; 25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: 26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; 27 When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.
Matthew 3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Studies showed that New Orleans could be flooded by a big hurricane
A. Rejecting warnings is popular
B. Rejecting warnings is painful
III. WE SHOULD LEARN LESSONS ABOUT REAL WRATH
Proverbs 29:1 He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.
A. It can be sudden
B. It can be strong
IV. WE SHOULD LEARN LESSONS ABOUT A REASSESSMENT OF WEALTH
Luke 12:15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
Material things:
A. Are not as reliable as we thought
B. Are not as required as we thought
V. WE SHOULD LEARN LESSONS ABOUT REGRET AND WEEPING
Matthew 8:12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
A. Over pain
B. Over parting – with things and loved ones – like Lot and his wife
VI. WE SHOULD LEARN LESSONS ABOUT RESCUE WORK
1 Corinthians 15:34 Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.
A. The shortage of workers
B. The shortness of time
C. The seriousness of the situation
VII. WE SHOULD LEARN LESSONS ABOUT REJOICING
Ezra 9:13 And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us such deliverance as this;
Psalms 126:3 The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.
A. Over the victims rescued
B. Over the volunteers’ zeal
Conclusion: There is a worse danger than a hurricane, flooding, or other earthly elements, the danger of dying without Christ and going to hell. Are you saved? If you are saved, are you helping rescue the perishing, people who are dying in their sins?
