DAVID, JESUS, AND DYING FOR ABSALOM

By Michael D. O’Neal

Scripture Reading: 2 Sam. 18:14-33

Text: 2 Sam. 18:33

2 Samuel 18:33 And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!

Introduction: For the last few years I have tried to show you prophecies, pictures, and portraits of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Old
Testament. He indicated that it could be done, when He said:

John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

What better Bible study could we conduct than to follow the example of our Lord, who when He rose again from the dead, met with two discouraged disciples …

Luke 24:27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

One of the greatest types, or prophetic pictures, of the Lord Jesus in the Old Testament is DAVID. In our text verse I see a picture of our Lord Jesus Christ, and His relationship toward sinners. Look with me first at:

I. THE DEAD SINNER

2 Samuel 18:33 And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!

O Absalom …

Absalom was DEAD. In that regard, Absalom reminds us of EVERY sinner. David said, “O Absalom, my son,” but the Lord Jesus Christ could have said, “O sons of Adam!”

Like Absalom, all men are

    A. Disobedient
        1. Tit. 3:3 – We were disobedient

    B. Deceitful
        1. Mk. 7:22 – Deceit is one of the evils of the heart – there are 13 of them, 13 being associated with rebellion
        2. Absalom was a rebel

    C. Dead
        1. Eph. 2:1

II. THE DISTRESS

2 Samuel 18:33 And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!

    A. There was a working in his heart
        1. The King was MUCH moved.

    B. There was weeping on his face – reminding us that Jesus wept (Jn. 11:35)

    C. There was a way about his steps
        1. And as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom
        2. Jesus walked among men with a broken heart, motivating Him to set His face as a flint toward the cross
        3. Jesus was a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief

III. THE DESIRE

2 Samuel 18:33 And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!

“… would God I had died for thee …”

    A. The desire was voiced
        1. Jesus repeatedly said that He was going to die for others.

    B. The desire was voluntary
        1. Jn. 10:17-18

    C. The desire was vicarious
        1. Jesus did not just die; He died for our SINS
        2. Christ died FOR THE UNGODLY
        3. The just FOR THE UNJUST
        4. Gal. 2:20 “gave himself for ME”

IV. THE DIFFERENCE

2 Samuel 18:33 And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!

In every prophetic picture in the Bible the likenesses do not match perfectly, because no individual can measure up to our wondrous Lord in every respect. In this particular case, however, the differences are so conspicuous that I believe they should be noted:

    A. In the person causing the grief
        1. Jesus tasted death for EVERY man
        2. Christ gave Himself for ALL

    B. In the penalty
        1. David wanted to give his life that Absalom might avoid physical death
        2. Jesus gave His life to keep men from suffering the SECOND death (Rev. 20:14-15)

    C. In the purity of the king
        1. David was a sinner, and some of his sins disgraced God publicly
        2. Jesus NEVER sinned, and He only brought honor to God the Father

    D. In the performance
        1. David lamented but could not die to save His son
        2. Jesus had compassion on our souls and came in the fulness of time, JUST in time, and won the victory by actually dying       for us!

    E. In the pardon accomplished
        1. David’s desire was unfulfilled
        2. Jesus died, purchased eternal redemption, and offers eternal life and forgiveness as a free gift for anyone who wants it!
