Scripture Reading: Job 14:1-17

Text: Job 14:14

Job 14:14 If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

Introduction:  Tonight I want to use our text verse to point you to Jesus, as I remind you that He said that the Old Testament was about HIM:

John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

Luke 24:27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

Luke 24:44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

Luke 24:45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

Our text is one of the several questions that Job asked, to which we find answers giving in the New Testament by the Lord Jesus Christ.

Job 14:14 If a man die, shall he live again? …

Here is the answer:

John 5:25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

I. THE PASSING OF LIFE

Job 14:1 Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.

     A. Like a flower of the grass
     B. Like the fragrance of the air
     C. Like the flame of a candle

Life speeds by. Someone has said that we go through the ages of
1. Cute Childhood
2. Tormented Teens
3. Thrilled Twenties
4. Thrifty Thirties
5. Fat Forties
6. Failing Fifties
7. Silver Sixties
8. Sick Seventies
9. Ailing Eighties
10. Numb Nineties

II. THE PROBLEMS OF LIVING

Job 14:1 Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.

     A. Man has supply problems – making a living

     B. Man has sickness problems – staying well

     C. Societal problems – getting along with others
        1. Relationships
        2. Companionship
        3. Marriage
        4. Wars

But primarily, man has a SIN problem …

III. THE POLLUTION OF MAN

Job 14:4 Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

See the third chapter of Romans for a thorough treatment of man’s depravity.

     A. Man has a polluted heritage – Rom. 5:12

     B. Man has a polluted heart – Jer. 17:9

     C. Man has polluted habits

IV. THE PUZZLE OF LIFE

Job 14:10 But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

Job 14:14 If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

     A. What is the purpose for living?  Why am I here?

     B. What is the prospect for the future?  Where am I going?

     C. What is the path to ultimate success and fulfillment?
How do I get to where I want to go?
        … heaven
        … happiness

V. THE PROMISE OF THE LORD
John 5:25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

Jesus provides life:

     A. As a possession in the soul – John 3:36
     B. As a pleasure beyond earthly pleasure – “more abundantly” –  John 10:10
        1. 1 Tim. 5 – woman living in pleasure but dead while she liveth
     C. As a perfection bodily in the resurrection – 1 Jn. 3:2
