PRAISE THE NAME OF JESUS

By Michael D. O’Neal
Pastor, Gospel Light Baptist Church
Albany, Georgia

Scripture Reading: 1 Chron. 29:1-14

Text: 1 Chron. 29:11

1 Chronicles 29:11 Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all.

Introduction: Tonight the world’s attention is fastened on a bunch of professional athletes who are competing in a football game called the Super Bowl. If these men are anything like many of their contemporaries who are in the news, they include drunks, dope heads, whoremongers, and foul-mouthed rebels against God. Sadly, many churches have decided to give their game the preeminence in their churches services tonight and relegated God and the word of God to a commercial break during “half-time.”

Here at Gospel Light Baptist Church we are going to do the opposite. We are going to give our commercial break to the Super Bowl and devote our prime time to JESUS. (Our commercial break begins right after the close of the service – then you can go home and watch the boobs on the boob tube to your heart’s content.)

The Super Bowl is only a game;
The Savior is GOD!

The Super Bowl will be forgotten in a few short years;
The Savior will be honored forever and ever!

Tonight I want to use our text verse to point you to Jesus, as I remind you that He said that the Old Testament was about HIM:

John 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

Let’s look at our text again:

1 Chronicles 29:11 Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all.

If you don’t think of Jesus when you read that, then please go to the book of Revelation and listen to the throngs of heaven

Revelation 5:12-13 Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. 13 And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.

and may I also remind you of the Pauline doctrine of the Lordship of Christ, stated as follows:

Philippians 2:9-11 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

  I. JESUS IS SUPREME IN GREATNESS
