The Gospel According To Romans 6:23

Below are notes to a sermon preached Sunday morning, Mar. 26, 2006, at Gospel Light Baptist Church, Albany, Georgia.

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ROMANS 6:23

Scripture Reading: Rom. 6:17-23

Text: Rom. 6:23

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Introduction: Romans is one of the greatest books of the Bible. It is in my opinion, the greatest book of the Bible, that expounds the need for, the necessity of, and the nature of salvation. Rom. 1-11 are about the PLAN for salvation, and Rom. 12-16 are about the PRODUCT of salvation.

Romans 6:23 is one of the greatest verses in the book of Romans. I want to bring you a message this morning called

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ROMANS 6:23

Let me remind you of how the gospel of the grace of God is defined. Paul declared it clearly in 1 Cor. 15:3-4

1 Corinthians 15:3-4 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I lso received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

I. ROMANS 6:23 SHOWS THE PROBLEM WE HAVE
” For the wages of sin …”

The gospel of 1 Cor. 15:3 says that Christ died for our SINS. Man’s problem is a SIN problem.

    A. Our problem is a common problem
        1. Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
        2. The down and out are SINNERS; that’s their biggest problem.
        3. The UP and out are ALSO sinners.
    B. Our problem is a character problem
        1. Man sins because he is a sinner
        2. Man’s sins reveal his character
        3. Psalms 39:5b … verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity.  Selah.
    C. Our problem is a chosen problem
        1. Man sins because of his nature, but he also sins because of his CHOICE
        2. Eve CHOSE to listen to Satan rather than to God and ate the fruit.
        3. Adam CHOSE to die with his wife rather than to live with his God

II. ROMANS 6:23 SHOWS THE PENALTY WE OWE
” … the wages of sin is DEATH”

The gospel says that Christ DIED for our sins.  Sin has a PENALTY. Someone must DIE.

    A. Sin is described by death
        1. 1 Timothy 5:6 But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.
    B. Sin is destructive until death
        1. James 1:15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
    C. Sin is deserving of death
        1. Like wages that are earned (Rom. 6:23)

III. ROMANS 6:23 SHOWS THE PRESENT GOD OFFERS
“the gift of God is eternal life”

    A. It is God’s gift
        1. Not the work of man, but the gift of God!
    B. It is the greatest gift
    C. It is a gracious gift
        1. Eph. 2:8-9
        2. Received by faith
        3. The unmerited favor of God

IV. ROMANS 6:23 SHOWS THE PRICE THAT HAS BEEN PAID
    “through Jesus Christ our Lord”
1 Cor. 15:3 “for our sins”

    A. Christ died voluntarily
    B. Christ died vicariously
    C. Christ died victoriously!

Conclusion: If you are not saved, I urge you to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ this morning. If you are already saved, let me encourage you to show the work of the gospel in a changed life. Get baptized, get n the right kind of church, and get busy for God!
